HOW TO BECOME AN OBLATE

Oblates enjoying conversation at the Fall retreat.

An Oblate of St. Benedict Monastery is an individual who has associated her/himself with the monastic community in order to enrich her/his Christian life.  One does not have to be a Catholic to become an Oblate.  Oblates adapt the Rule of Benedict to the circumstances of their daily lives.  Oblates grow in love of God by spending time daily reflecting on the Sacred Scriptures, cultivating an awareness of God through silence and devoting time to the praise of God, often through by praying some portion of the Liturgy of the Hours.

Twice a year, Oblates participate in an all day retreat at the monastery and are welcome to spend other times of there, either in quiet reflection or by joining the Sisters in the praying of the Liturgy of the Hours.

Oblates become like leaven in the world, building up the Kingdom of God.  The work they do becomes sanctified by the time given to prayer at various times during the day  “that in all things God may be glorified. (Ut in omnia glorifcetur Deus.)

OBLATE NOVICES

An introduction to basic Benedictine values is given through classes scheduled at the monastery by the Director, Sister Marcella Schmalz, OSB, and Oblate Catherine Wedding.  After participation in three classes, a candidate may make first commitment.  In the spirit of the gospel, Oblates commit themselves to a continual conversion to Christ. Oblates share in the spiritual works of the monastery. The Directors provide instruction through classes, group discussions, and reading material, as well as a bi-monthly newsletter.

FINAL COMMITMENT

After a one-year period, the Oblate Novice may make final oblation and be enrolled as an Oblate of St. Benedict Monastery. The role of Oblates is to live in the world, to become holy in the world, and to do what they can to bring Christ to the world through their example.
