ENVIRONMENT
(And How to Find Us)
|
The
spiritual environment at St. Benedict Monastery is a result of many
dynamics that involve the sisters, their relationship to one another,
their relationship to God, and their relationship to creation.
The
physical environment is simply exquisite and provides many opportunities
to see the beauty of Gods creation in the universe. Populations
of mule deer, barn owls, coyotes and song birds are a constant reminder
of this. As a result, the sisters are very concerned about their
role in using wise conservation practices and have associated themselves
with the Promised Land Network, an organization that provides many
conferences and workshops to help all of us learn wise stewardship
of Gods resources.
We
are also concerned about maintaining an environment of peacefulness
and quiet as a respite for our many visitors. The sisters observe
many periods of silence throughout the week, as well as special
recollection days once a month and whole days of silence during
the feasts of Lent, Easter and Christmas. This allows the monastery
to provide an environment that differs greatly from the hustle and
bustle of everyday life.
The Monastery is located 15 miles south of Amarillo, Texas. The
easiest way to get to the Monastery is from I-27 and Rockwell Road.
Whether coming from the North or South on I-27, take Rockwell Road
exit 111, going east. Cross the railroad tracks and stay on Rockwell
until the pavement ends. There you will find S. Western Street.
Turn right onto South Western. The monastery is the first building
on the left.
